How did the harvest start in Romania?

Как стартира жътвата в Румъния?

In our northern neighbor, the harvest was also started, but the first results are extremely hesitant. For the moment, attitudes are rather positive regarding average yield, and extremely negative regarding price developments.

Kosmin grows 400 hectares of wheat in Ilfov. At the beginning of the week, he entered the fields with the harvesters and said that the harvest will be richer than last year. But this does not fill him with joy at all.

He told Gazeta de Sud that he will barely be able to cover his costs because higher production is guaranteed to reduce prices, which are already extremely low.

"Wheat prices are currently drastically low. Trading at 85 lei per kilo (340 BGN/ton), when last year it was somewhere around 1.60 lei (630 BGN/ton), against the backdrop of fantastic production costs, it will make many of us wonder whether agriculture is profitable, but does it even make economic sense," the farmer shakes his head.

According to the latest estimates, Romania could harvest around 10.5 million tons of wheat, which would be more than one million tons more than the 2022 result.

Florin Barbu, Minister of Agriculture in the country also commented on the start of the harvest: "This is a very good agricultural year. If God allows us to harvest without problems, I am sure that this year Romania will provide large quantities of grain for domestic consumption and for other countries in the European Union."

According to statistics, Romania is in 2nd place in the ranking of European countries that export wheat. France is in 1st place, and Germany is in 3rd place. For the period between July 1, 2022 and June 25, 2023, Romania exported 4.6 million tons of wheat.

In terms of trade, at the beginning of the week the prices of grain for delivery to the port of Constanta were: bread wheat - 196 EUR/ton, feed wheat - 186 EUR/ton, corn - 188 EUR/ton, barley - 170 EUR/ton, sunflower – 377 dollars/ton.
