Ukraine exported 10.5 million tons of grain through the Romanian port of Constanta in the first nine months of this year, the port authority told Reuters.
For comparison, in the first eight months of this year, 9.2 million tons of Ukrainian grain were exported, and in 2022, Ukraine exported 8.6 million tons of grain through the port of Constanta.
The figures do not include volumes handled through Romania's smaller Danube ports, such as Galați, which would bring the monthly average to more than two million tonnes.
The total volume of grain exported through the port of Constanta is 25.1 million tons of grain for the period between January and September 2023, is an annual record.
In the coming months, the Romanian government wants to double the monthly transit capacity for Ukrainian grain to four million tons, for which a number of infrastructure investments are already underway, Reuters informed.
Port operators are also investing in equipment to increase loading speeds.
In the 2022/23 season, the port of Constanta delivered a record 24.5 million tons of grain. Three new floating cranes are currently under construction, which will increase the port's capacity to 30 million tonnes per year, meaning new potential exports are likely to be around 27-28 million tonnes.
Regarding trade in neighboring Romania, at the beginning of the week the prices of grain for delivery to the port of Constanta were: bread wheat - 215 EUR/ton, feed wheat - 198 EUR/ton, corn - 187 EUR/ton, barley - 177 EUR/ ton, sunflower – 385 dollars/ton.
